Beware Netizens, Grammar Nazis are Around

Before I start my Blog, I would like to explain what Grammar Nazis are. According to KnowYourMeme.com, Grammar Nazis also known as Grammar Police are one of those so called “trolls” of the internet. These are people who think that it is actually their duty to correct any grammar and spelling errors around the Internet.

What are their objectives for doing so?  Are they infesting the web?

In my own understanding of Grammar Nazis, their objectives for doing this are not only to enhance others’ writing skills but also to earn self-gratification in the process. They are correcting us to make us look like fools.   They believed that grammar measure one’s intelligence.  We do not realize that sometimes following the rules in grammar will express what we really want to convey.     Despite these cons, these “trolls” are playing big role in making us cautious of our grammar and spelling.  They would not surface if we are watchful of our English usage.  They remind us of how important we should take English language seriously.  The problem with us is that we do not really care about our grammar, as long as the readers understand what we mean. But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar.  That is when the Grammar Nazis come and bring us heaps of embarrassment.

Though often times this Grammar Nazis are annoying somehow they can help in reducing internet slang which is very prominent nowadays and we will become more wary on the things we post in the web.

  1. "Before I start my Blog" I think that the word blog should not be capitalized, "Despite these cons" in my own opinion the word "cons" is not proper and therefore should be changed.

I hope I did not sound like a "Grammar Nazi" because of the mistakes I pointed out. Moreover, I thank you for introducing me to those "devious trolls" because I become more aware that somebody watches my grammar, just waiting to pounce the moment I make a mistake.

  2. I was sort of a Grammar Nazi once. But I wasn't one to pinpoint every single grammatical mistake that I saw. I just sat there silently and kept my thoughts to myself. And I commend you for blogging about them! I agree that even though they come off as offensive when they correct people, they still help in improving one's grammar.

  3. The word "blog" should not be capitalized because it is not a proper name. The other thing I noticed was you did not used a comma to separate the "added information".

"According to KnowYourMeme.com, Grammar Nazis also known as Grammar Police are one of those so called “trolls” of the internet."

You could have added a comma after "Nazis", and "Police". I do not know how "added information" is technically called, but I hope I got my point across.

Other than those slips, I think you have written this entry very well.

  4. "But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar."

It is proper if you use "However" than "But".

  5. Be mindful that capitalization, correct word choice and use of punctuation marks are important for you to infer the meaning of your sentences clearer.

Honestly speaking, this is the first time I heard about Grammar Nazis. I am not even aware that such exist, so thank you for this new information. For me, they could help us a lot even though sometimes they turn out to be rude.

  6. "But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar."

I find this sentence incorrect. For me, it should be like this, ".... but let us be reminded that there will be some readers who will not going to understand what we are trying to say unless the grammar is correct".

  7. I think we have the same problems in terms of using punctuation marks because I was confused with some of your sentences and had trouble understanding your thoughts.

"Though often times this Grammar Nazis are annoying somehow they can help in reducing internet slang which is very prominent nowadays and we will become more wary on the things we post in the web."

This paragraph can benefit with some commas or semicolons.

I also commend you for introducing me to the "Grammar Nazis" because now I become aware that there are people out there watching the way we write. With this awareness I could be mindful of my spelling and grammar usage as to not attract these "trolls".

  8. I am a Grammar Nazi, but not all the times. I correct others' mistakes, not to make them a fool, but to learn from these. You're chosen topic is very appropriate for us students, because we are studying grammar for how many years but still, most of us are not aware of these mistakes.

    1. I think that should be "your chosen topic" rather than "you're chosen topic".

    2. I'm sorry. That's only typographical error. I'm in a hurry when I'm posting my comment. Thank you Camille for correcting me. Grammar Nazis are in red alert!

  11. "But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar." Always be reminded that one should not start his/her sentence with a conjunction.

Like Yona, this is the first time I heard about Grammar Nazis so thank you for the new information.

  12. It's the first time I heard about "Grammar Nazis". Thank you for this new information. For me, people like them are sometimes misunderstood by many, but if you look to their objectives, they help to the improvement of one's writing.

Yes, be aware with the use of punctuation marks, particularly commas.

  13. Your post is very informative. Just be aware on using the correct punctuation marks to avoid confusion.

  14. "But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar."

You can use however or though instead of using "but".

Grammar Nazis should do their objectives in a good way not to the point that someone will look like a dumb. All of us here are being "Grammar Nazis". It is nice that we are doing this in a good way for us to learn from each other.

By the way, thank you for the new information.

  15. "But sometimes others would not understand what we have written unless we use good grammar." "But" is a conjunction and we shouldn't use conjunctions whenever we start a sentence. I also noticed that you capitalized the word "blog" but I think it should not be capitalized. Thank you for the new information.

  16. Be cautious in using punctuation marks, proper tenses, and conjunctions. Also, be aware in constructing your sentences and in choosing the right words.

I have no problem with someone letting me know about a typo or a grammatical problem, but be sure to say it in a friendly and useful manner.

  17. Like the others, it is also my first time to hear about Grammar Nazis. Thank you for the information!

The word "blog" must not be capitalized because it is a common noun.

  18. Hi Angelo! It is the first time I heard about Grammar Nazis. Thank you for the information.

You wrote, "The problem with us is that we do not really care about our grammar, as long as the readers understand what we mean.". You generalized and used the word we. I do not agree with that. I care about my grammar because it would deliver my message clearer. I also do not agree that the Grammar Police corrects one's grammar to make one look like a fool.

In the first paragraph, you used are to refer to the Grammar Police. You should have used is because Grammar Police is considered singular.
In the second paragraph, you wrote, "In my own understanding". I think it is better if you just used the word my because my plus own sounds redundant. You also wrote, "They believed that grammar measure one’s intelligence." measure should have a s in the ending because the word grammar is singular. You also used the word believed. It confused me. Does that mean they believed before but not now anymore?

I am sorry if I am being a Grammar Nazi. =)

  19. What an interesting topic! I think that what makes the term sound so mean and negative is how these so-called "trolls" correct people's grammar while disregarding the rules of etiquette in general. However, it is good that you pointed out that Grammar Nazis can be friends too. :)

"They believed that grammar measure one’s intelligence. We do not realize that sometimes following the rules in grammar will express what we really want to convey." Tense consistency would've made this part easier to understand.

  20. I personally think that Grammar Nazis are misunderstood. Sometimes they are very helpful in improving my grammar since I am not very mindful at times.

  21. I have no problem with these Grammar Nazis. I actually think netizens and these grammar OC people benefit from each other. Grammar Nazis earn self gratification and netizens recognize and learn from their mistakes. It could have been better though, if they correct people in a none rude and none offensive manner.

  22. I was really caught by your title. Informative and very interesting it is, indeed. And I agree that, sometimes, Grammar Nazis are quite offending. However, they are a huge help, aren't they?

  23. Nice blog! Your blog is really informative and I learned a lot.

  24. Great job! This article really informs us about Grammar Nazis. Same problem, always confuse where and when to use commas to make my writings understandable. and be in their proper thoughts. God bless.

  25. The topic as well as the title was exemplary. I was terrified by the thought that such "aliens" exist in this planet to "invade" others' way of expressing thoughts.
Thanks for sharing the news! I'll be cautious from now on.

  26. This is really informative, but I would have really appreciated it if you made your third paragraph into two paragraphs. So that it would be easier to read and understand. Nice job, nevertheless.
